Transport yourself to the early 1900s when the Ringstrong tea estate, under the ownership of Mr. Bagdon (or Cruikshank), held a poignant tale. Mr. Bagdon, a London resident who frequented the tea garden, had a daughter named Margaret who fell in love with the estate's captivating beauty. Tragically, Margaret's life was cut short when she fell ill during her return voyage to England and passed away. In honor of his beloved daughter, Mr. Bagdon renamed the estate as Margaret's Hope. Legends suggest that Margaret's spirit visits the estate bungalow, entering through the main guestroom and departing through the study, verandah, and tennis courts.

Margaret's Hope boasts predominantly Chinese Jat bushes, which contribute to the tea's vibrant green appearance, abundance of tips, and captivating fragrance. The high altitudes and cool weather in which the tea is grown result in slower bush growth, ultimately limiting production.

The pinnacle of quality at Margaret's Hope is achieved during the second flush, spanning from the end of May to the end of June. At this time, Darjeelings are unparalleled in the tea world. Their fragrance and taste encompass a complex bouquet that emanates from the cup. Some discern nutty undertones, while others detect hints of black currants. However, most commonly, the taste and fragrance are likened to that of muscat grapes.

There are three primary seasons for producing high-quality Darjeeling teas:

  1. First flush: These teas are harvested from late February to mid-April, capturing the essence of springtime. The young leaves yield a light tea with intense muscatel notes, offering a gentle afternoon tea experience.

  2. Second flush: Harvested in June, these teas showcase full development. The liquor displays a bright hue, while the taste is robust and rounded, with excellent muscatel characteristics. This makes it an exceptional choice for an afternoon tea, particularly when accompanied by scones and raspberry conserve.

  3. Autumnal: Availability of these teas depends on weather conditions and may vary. Autumnal Darjeelings are characterized by their rounded taste and coppery liquor, making them an excellent choice for a breakfast tea.

Immerse yourself in the captivating flavors and enchanting tales of Margaret's Hope and savor the exquisite Darjeeling teas it produces throughout the seasons.
